I know we've had threads like this in the past, but hopefully, in this subforum, it'll last a bit longer on the first page.
I know I've shared this story before, but I'll bore you so more with it. In college in the mid-90's when me and my roomate just pulled our resources and got a PS1. I was on the bus back to campus where I overheard these two dudes talking about your character walking around a scary house. I think that weekend me and my roomate went to the store and rented REsident Evil. We got it back to our apartment, not realizing what we were dealing with besides what I shared from the two guy's story.
The first part that got us was the zoomed in slow-mo cutscene of the zombie turning around when you walk into the room. But really got us to pee ourselvees...
I don't think before that moment that there was "jump-scare scenes" in gaming.

Silent Hill had the first jump scares in a game for me.i think it's before you actually fight any creatures when a cat or a dog jumps out of a locker you walk by.

A year and a half after Resident Evil... I met my wife. We played Silent HIll.. in the dark at a house we just moved into.
Talk about creepy...wAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy more scarier than RE. Walking through that school, with only the flashlight, and some sort of little ghost thing kept popping up.

Yeah me and my gf played it late nights... Made it all the way to the end but didn't have enough ammo for the boss, had to back track and search for some lol that game was a pain in the ass. I loved it though.

I went over to a friends house, he had a demo disc that had 3 or 4 PS2 game demos on it and we tried them out. I remember when God of War opened with
"The Gods of Olympus have abandoned me.... Now there is no hope."
"And Kratos cast himself from the highest mountain in all of Greece. After 10 year of suffering, 10 years of endless nightmares, it would finally come to an end. Death would be his escape from madness."
Flashback to a ship in the middle of the sea before Kratos hits the rocks and you begin quite literally ripping a bunch of enemies to shreds.
It was the most violent satisfying feeling, I could feel my young teenage self pouring my frustration and angst into the game, as I ripped harpies wings off and smashed in zombie skulls.
Then came the part where as I walked through the ship after defeating enemies a giant fucking Hydra head busted through the ships hull and starts attacking. Me and my friend struggled to beat it. From there we finished the demo and I knew I needed more. I loved greek mythology even then and the game tied into it. Plus the sheer release of anger I felt when playing that game..
I think I rented the original game, needed my older brother to do it for me as my parents were anti violent games at that point. I played the game in semi-secrecy from them, thinking I was sneaky to pause it when they came in the room and to act like I needed to get a glass of water or go to the bathroom lol.
Anyways. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a playthrough of a game more than that one. Its also didn't hurt that there were lots of boobies and the animated cut scenes were the most amazing graphics I had seen to date.
I remember climbing the side of a titan the size of a fucking mountain, to get to the top to find it carrying a temple the size of a small mountain on its back. Fuck did I ever feel like a badass..
Never did gaming feel more epic than when playing GoW.

I'm older than most of you guys, so when RPG's first came around, I wanted ZERO parts of that type of gaming. I thought it was weird and unenjoyable. I was last to get every video game system (Poverty PSR in effect) so for me to get the first Xbox... i ended up going to a pawn shop a year and a half in. I asked the guy to take a couple of dollas off... which he didn't but he threw in Nights Of The Old Republic. I poo-poo'd it.. cause I didn't care about role playing games. One night of pure boredom, I put it in... I didn't put that controller down for FOUR HOURS!!!
I had never been pulled into the storyline of a game such as this before. Having the ability for the game to change depending on how you answered questions... how people treated you... how your force powers changed... how your looks changed. I played that game from the start to finish both good and bad. Even my wife, who was a one time gamer... but had fallen off over the years got into it.
And let's not forget, the reveal...(spoilers) [/video] PS.... I was so hooked, I went out and read the Revan novel. Yes... as hard core of a Trek fan I am. I've actually read almost as many Star Wars book.

Notable moments... in college me and my broke roommate, when we weren't watching each other play resident Evil.... twisted metal 2 carried us through the year. Being split screen, we played that ish almost every night. The replayability of that game... Some days you could make it all the way, other days... Twister would catch you in a narrow corridor.. and your dead.
I was the first guy in school to beat Metroid and find the red ring in Zelda.
Came back from a 14-0 deficit in Madden '93 champion edition using the '92 Cowboys against the '85 bears. In that game both the 85 bears and 72 dolphins were ridiculously stacked.
The whole final area of ff6 is pretty was pretty epic. Especially when you only really use 4 players throughout the game and you have to split up into 3 groups.
Beating both the NES Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2. No checkpoints in 3 was just too much for me.
My friend and I beating Toejam and Earl was a miracle.
