I knew this guy, very loosely. We weren’t friends or anything but used to do some surfing together in La Jolla. The story is, the guy and his family (wife and two sons, age 3 and 4), disappeared off the face of the earth in 2010. Their car was found abandoned near the Mexico border a few days after they disappeared. Police in San Diego eventually concluded that they had voluntarily disappeared to Mexico and closed the case. Then in 2013 a guy was riding his dirt bike in the high desert near Victorville, a few hundred miles northeast of where the family disappeared. He saw some human bones, and it turns out that the entire family had been killed with a sledgehammer, tied up, and buried in the desert. They eventually arrested the guy’s main business partner, his motive was financial. He had a gambling problem, was deeply in debt, and was apparently about to be fired by the murdered guy. He wrote a bunch of checks to himself in the days after the family disappeared, forging the dead guy’s signature. They also found trace amounts of his DNA in the family’s abandoned car, and his cell phone pinged off towers near where the bodies were discovered a few days after the disappearance. The defense says that there’s no hard evidence linking him to the crime, his DNA in the car was because the two guys had a business meeting the day of the disappearance and shook hands, if the accused guy drove the car his DNA would have been all over it, an older guy like the accused wouldn’t be able to overpower an athletic 40 year old guy and his whole family and transport the bodies by himself, the cell phone pings aren’t accurate and prove nothing, another business associate threatened the dead guy and his family a few months before, etc etc.
I think the guy is guilty as hell and hope he fries.
I was in La Jolla in 2009 for my 10th anniversary. That's a nice beach and exquisite coastline. Like Craigster, I recall the video of the family walking together, which added to the speculation he just wanted to run away from it all with his family. Sucks that all it takes is a greedy, selfish SOB to wreck your whole life when they turn on you.
