Some random thoughts. My therapist suggests that I read a lot more than I have been lately. Not just on the internet, but real books. She claims that it makes the synapses fire and increases the size and activity of the brain. Apparently they have weighed brains from avid readers and non-readers and the former have heavier brains. I have to wonder who volunteered for this study.
So, in the course of conversation I found out she was very concerned about her daughters and a group she runs in because they are going off to college next fall and none of them have any self defense training. After discussing this for a while, I found that she was seriously concerned and contacted my old buddy who teaches martial arts in a southern area of the state. He in turn has introduced me to the Head of the World Taekwondo Federation here in Indiana and his wife. They are going to set up a class for these young ladies this spring. Should evolve into a somewhat substantial group once the word gets out. I could attend as an old pervert in a wheelchair and let them beat me up a little, I suppose. Yeah, j/k.
Met this fellow at the gym who wanted to reintroduce me to my Lord and Savior. Not really all that interested, but in the course of the conversation I found out that he has a son who is a bipolar 2 as well. Having a pretty rough time of it with him too. I suggested our boys get together and share experiences. Might convince him to open up and communicate a bit more. At least we are hopeful. Mine has indicated he is more than willing to meet with him and particularly to discuss his reluctance to stay on his meds. My son also has experience with that and thinks it is a tragic mistake. Hoping this all goes well.
Funny, just talking to people and one thing leads to another.

Total co-sign. I've recently befriended an anthropology PHD dude at UNM. He's my neighbor. What began as a few beers turned into my writing benefiting from his anthropology "jesting" and little did Eye know that he was teaching a class about gender and health. It's pretty complicated but much to Been Best's chagrin, Eye actually don't hate women and treat them with respect in the bar place. He mentioned that I've helped as a medium in his studies and he thinks he's worse than Eye am. But there's a lot to do with it like how long do you look at a hot girl and lots of small things I'd have never thought of. The idea is that when you gawk at chicks and generally treat them like dirt--even in random social situations, it may very well take years off their lives. Thus, gender and health.
Forward, Eye met his GF (also UNM anthro PHD) and got her into my art class. And we all drink a lot of beer too. So cool. I'd call that making friends, but indeed one thing leads to another!

I see the mental health tie-in, vague though it may be. Didn't really think about being a dick and hitting on women who didn't want the attention was life shortening, but I suppose that is possible. For my part, just getting out and interacting with people does seem to help with my mood and soften my depression. And I have always liked to entertain. Probably comes from being raised as an only kid. In any event, if I am to remain above dirt, I might as well make the best of it. Yes?

Yes, and it's more about helping people and taking the help. The older you get, I'm sure the more rewarding it is. In my perfect world I'd make a lot of money and ignore everyone. But luckily Eye can't fathom that. So give as much as you can and take a little? If you're lucky, you fall into an anthropology crowd lol. These motherfuckers aren't trying to fix the world, they're studying how to fix the world. We went and saw Black Flag the other night (punk band) and then he ran into fellow professors and we all ended up drinking late on the other side of town. So I've heard his reverb, but the other dudes were cool too. They all have different concentrations. Eye always pondered anthropology but Eye kind of figured myself out. So these guys are like WHAT DO YOU WRITE ABOUT? And that's a very good question. Y'know, we drank heavily and got some food. Just normal banter, but the best part was giving them educated, honest answers to questions they need answers to. Honest answers. Eye too like to entertain, but these guys were over the top and I'm cool. My best friend in HS, her father was anthro. We chatted life away. He's passed. But I've fallen into a decent crowd. No drugs, too much drinking, but real.
The whole gender and health thing is pretty interesting. Anthropology is generally interesting. I'm NOT GONNA DO IT lol. Not officially, anyway. I'm gonna keep writing and maybe I've been doing anthropology all along? Not sure. Not studiously, obviously. English and creative writing doesn't dismiss anthropology, though. Eye did jokingly tell them that they're wasting their lives on the social sciences. We had a good laugh on that.
No offense Eyeland, but this may not be the right venue for that kind of soul searching regardless of how well intended. This is supposed to be a safe place for discussions about mental illness and related issues.
My initial point was that whether is us depression, bipolar disorder, or whatever, putting your self out there and interacting with others is often very helpful and can lead to some surprising encounters.
