And there is a divide between people who want to make everything political and people who dont
I get what you're saying, but for many people there isn't a separation between "politics" and real life. And in many cases, it's not because they're crazy - it's because they recognize the serious impacts of government on themselves and/or other people. People who are comfortable have the luxury of "being above" politics and political battles. And in fact, many Americans have been socialized to be apathetic about politics, to believe that discussing politics is impolite and/or just a way to spoil a good time and alienate people, etc. But 2020 has shown us that policies can be a matter of life or death.
I'm not talking g about being apathetic or being above politics. I'm talking about people that just don't see the need to make everything political. Take masks for example. The wearing of masks should in no way be political, but a certain segment has made it political, due in no small part to the attitude if the president. It's stupid little shit like that that I am referring to.

Okay, but then should other people just accept that it's a political difference to the anti-mask people and not treat them any differently? Of course, I'm more at risk than most people. But even if I wasn't, I wouldn't go around family members who refuse to wear a mask because they think it's a conspiracy to hurt Trump/make Bill Gates and Faucci rich off of a vaccine/take away our rights, etc. And I wouldn't allow my kids around them. In addition to the health issue, I don't want my kids staying with people with crazy ideas.
Now, that's an extreme situation, and the health risk will probably be temporary. But I can understand how some people don't want to associate with family members with foul and/or crazy beliefs - especially if they express them pretty often. Same deal with foul and/or crazy religious beliefs or any other type of belief. I don't know the details of your wife's family. But being related to someone doesn't mean that you have to associate with them or even that you should. Even short of physical or psychological abuse, I don't have a problem with people cutting off family members who are just a net negative in their life. Why should you have to talk and listen to someone spout foul or crazy beliefs just because you share more DNA with them than a stranger on the street or someone you know because they're a friend of a friend?
Locally, people are afraid to put a Trump/Pence sign on their law for fear of vandalism.
That's the world we live in.
Or BlackLivesMatter signs or Biden signs or LGBTQ signs...that’s the world we live in. Not just a world where the MAGA minority’s problems are worse than everyone else.
snerb Where are we going, and why am I in a hand basket?

We were at a northern WI lakeside bar 4th of July weekend. There's a ton of boat traffic there under a narrow bridge that connects the two biggest parts of the flowage....
Some dude anchored his pontoon right next to the narrow channel next to the bridge, raised a Trump 2020 flag and was blaring to national anthem. Lol. Hilarious to watch and see all the reactions. He gave zero fucks.

It was so funny to see the reactions of all the other boats. Made for an entertaining lakeside lunch.

I've only seen BlackLivesMatter signs. There are many in my town. They are respected.
