As a veteran of dark souls, dark souls 2, and dark souls 3, i can say that Mortal Shell is the closest thing to dark souls i have ever seen. Even the loading screens and inventory. That said, this game was made buy a very small company (the credits seriously might not have lasted more than 1 minute).
Graphics wise i thought it looked better and more polished than dark souls games (but i am playing this kn the series x)
Gameplay wise, it has the typical “dont die until you get to this point for your checkpoint”. Instead of bonfires theres a statue lady you have to activate (her soul can only be in kne statue at a time so the last one activated is the respawn point)
The combat is different in the fact that there is no shield- you have the ability to “harden” which is you turn to stone and take no damage for one hit, its fun starting a melee animation, hardening, then unhardening to deal damage
All that being said, theres not many unique enemies and they are all fairly easy once you get the patterns down. Theres only 4 main bosses and a few lesser bosses.
Final verdict 8/10 - its a much shorter (20ish hours), easier, and much more relaxing version of dark souls, well worth the $20 i grabbed it for on the holiday xbox sale
