I've seen people suggest Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for Joel. He looks the part as long as he can pull off an American accent.
Either way it's awesome, Pedro Pascal is getting that work in. Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, and Metal Gear Solid?! I swear this guy is following me around lol.

Nikolaj would have been a good choice. I've liked everything I've seen Pascal in and I really like The Last of Us so I'm actually pretty excited about this.

And Bella Ramsey is Ellie, she was great in GOT.
I've never played Last of Us, but I am excited since they got two of the best minor characters/actors from GoT to star in this. I have been waiting for a Oberyn Martell/Lyanna Mormont spin off...

Oof I got my Star Wars actors mixed up Oscar Issac is playing Snake, not Pedro Pascal. Though Pedro would be a dope Cyborg Ninja|Gray Fox.

Bella was awesome in GoT, not sure how I like her as Ellie, the face doesn't really match IMO.

I care less about the looks and more about her getting Ellies personality on point. Them looking alike doesn't matter, them getting the dynamic and feel right is everything for TLOU.

I really liked the game but I am really into zombies. The story was great too.
It's probably going to suck. I Don't have high hopes for something like this at all.
from the creators of Chernobyl so there is hope
It's not that I doubt there are talented people working on this, I'm sure there are. I just always tend to be suspicious when it comes to adaptations like this in general.
I don't know how many episodes this is going to be, but TLoU is a 20ish hour game. It's probably going to be extremely difficult to fit everything in, and not simply end up as (in comparison to the game) a condensed version where the characters or world don't feel nearly as fleshed out. Adaptations like these rarely get the time they need.

Its not 20 hours of story though. A lot of that is gameplay where not a lot of actual story development is done. Yes there is character development in those moments but not all of it. There is probably 10 hours worth of just gameplay. So if they make a 13 episode series at 45 minutes a Pop or even full hour episodes they should have more than enough to cover all the story and development. Television is much better suited for this than a movie, and HBO does good work, so long as they get good directors.

I'm not sure it's really half gameplay and half story stuff either, lol. It's a really narrative-driven game. But those semantics aside, the character interactions in the quieter moments of the game where it's just Joel and Ellie talking about seemingly insignificant things is part of what separates TLoU from the rest to begin with. You just don't often come across characters in games who get humanized that much, or who form that strong of a bond with each other. You take that stuff out and all of a sudden their relationship feels a lot more superficial. If they adapt the series only hitting on the major story beats it's all going to feel hollow, and usually that's what happens with adaptations where the source material is a lot longer.

I hope it's only loosely based on the game instead of a 1:1 representation. Have a few of the same events but fill it out with new content.
I have faith this can definitely work after The Witcher's success.

Just looking up sole metrics to go into this, for the simple purpose of.. I wanted to lol.
TLOU is a 12 to 16 hour game. The WR speedrun is 2h and 29m. Meaning that totally optimized there is 2 and a half hours of total gameplay. But most people upon a first playthrough wont hit anywhere near that 2 and a half hours of gameplay. You are correct even in gameplay moments there are little interactions that help develop. But we are looking at roughly 10 hours of story. And another maybe an hour of interactions?
Lets exaggerate to give a safe number say 13 hours of time for all that. Now HBO won't just focus purely on Joel and Ellie and will likely have side stories and characters going on. So they will absolutely need more time than that.. So I would be hoping for around.. 18ish hours of television for just the first game..
Its not that tall of an order. I hope they give it the time it deserves and focus on the things that really matter in the story. Overall I trust HBO, especially with the makers Chernobyl involved. You aren't wrong to be skeptical as video games haven't translated well to most other media yet.

After pledging my sword to House Mormount a long time ago, I feel some type way about her being Ellie. Seriously though, she has the acting chops for it, but she looks nothing like Ellie. Sooooo many other actresses out there could have pulled it off, especially since we are locked into the Ellie looked like Ellen( Elliot) Paige. Oh well, it will be interesting nevertheless. I love Ahsoka, but I am already sold on Rosario Dawson continuing to play her, so what do I know.
Edit: Bella is 17 and only 5'1. So they are probably thinking they have a youthful actress who isn't getting any taller, so she can play really young Ellie the first season or two, and then transition to the adult Ellie later on.
