I talk about it all the time so my friends know about it, but God Hand is an insanely underrated game that never got the proper attention back when it was released. It's kind of gained cult classic status over time, but it's still a game that not enough people have played or heard about.
also Terranigma. It was a action RPG for the SNES that never got a North American release, so it's not very known because of that. But it did get an English release in Europe so if you can track down a ROM or something of that version that's a fantastic game.
Final Fantasy IX. I mostly see it getting shit on, but I loved it. Yeah, the locked in character classes could have been different, but it was a good game.
And Nobuo Uematsu did Nobuo Uematsu shit, the music was awesome.

Arguably my favorite of the whole series. I spent more time on this game than any other FF game, and I'm still not 100% how the fuckin card game works...

ff9 is def not the black sheep you think it is lol
ff8 and ff13 get the most shit and rightfully so. ff9 is way way more likely to be in peoples top 3 FF vs their bottom 3

Agreed. IX has always been at the top of most people’s lists.
Feels wrong to combine 8 and 13 though, lol. 13 was on a completely different tier of being a POS.

i think 8 would be more enjoyable to replay outside of the 3 hour bullshit opening that is completely boring but on a first playthrough of each i think 8 is worse. Prob has higher highs (like when you control Laguna and those other characters that are way better than squalls gang) and much lower lows with some pretty ass backwards systems that almost require grinding. Its pretty funny that those characters in flash backs or flash sideways or whatever that you know nothing about are way more interesting than the main cast lmao. Also the battle theme for their sections is a straight up bop. 8's ending might be worse than the GoT tv show

I think people have revisited FF9 and changed their opinion, but it used to get shit on. I erred in saying "I mostly see," should have said "I used to see," but that was a long time ago.
FF9 was like my first RPG so it has that special nostalgia for me.
I liked FF8 fine (more so as an adult when I understood how to abuse the junction function) and got through FF13, but I think FF12 is the only one I just stopped playing halfway through because I was bored. I have not played any from before FF7 tho.

Ff12 is good but it's just different. Good attempt to try something new but glad they didn't stick with it. Lol @ you not playing ff6 which is the best jrpg ever

I already told you that FF9 was my first RPG. I went back to FF8 and FF7, but when I got back to the 2D shit? Fuck that. The last FF related thing that wasn't at least visually 3D that was any good was 8-Bit Theater imo. I say that with complete ignorance of those 2D games I haven't played - which is all of them - but fuck it, I don't wanna play them, so fuck it. If I wanna play a 2D game I'll play old Fire Emblem games.

it literally looks better than 7 8 and 9 and has a better story, setting, and better characters than all the rest
if you get the itch for turn based shit like those other final fantasies dont say i didnt tell you so, ff6 and chrono trigger are transformative in the genre and the pixel art is not only beautiful but has aged far better than early 3d games. Youre missing out on so many GOAT games but just saying no to pixel art or 16 bit SNES games. How you gonna tell me you havent played either of those rpgs or Super Metroid or A Link to the Past? They are literally all in my top 5 games of all time with the other being Metroid Prime.

Okay I forgot about Chrono Trigger, loved that. And I have played 2D Zelda games on the handheld stations, but I've never gone back to anything pre-N64 time-wise.
And isn't Metroid a platformer? That's not an RPG. It's a platformer. And I hate platformers. Because I'm bad at them. Which doesn't speak to the game's quality, but fuck it, I don't wanna play something when I know I'm not good at them. You enjoy them all you like.

Metroid is kind of its own game genre youve probably heard metroidvania before. Its a combo of exploration, atmosphere, puzzles, combat, platforming (usually not that precise but it can go as in depth as you want it to since it has a high skill ceiling), and new power ups opening up areas all over the map so they are usually considered nonlinear. The last bullet point is basically what everyone considers metroidvania, you come across an area you might not be able to get to yet but it looks interesting so you either try to sequence break in there or remember to come back later when you have some other cool shit. Exploring and discovering secrets is definitely the main appeal it is not a platformer like mario or donkey kong where that is all you do.
