What does this mean? If there are no strings attached, why not wait to release Zeke until closer to June 1st?

He is set to count $16.72 million against the Cowboys’ salary cap this season, and is coming off a season in which he gained a career-low 876 yards and averaged a career-low 3.8 yards per carry. The Cowboys used the franchise tag to keep Tony Pollard, who at this point is the team’s best running back.

Cutting Elliott would free up $4.86 million in cap space, or $10.9 million if they designate him a post-June 1 release.

Doing it now allows Elliot to sign anywhere, but they will still be obligated to his cap until June 1st. There is always a decent amount of Free Agents that get released after the Draft that could be available for the Cowboys at that time. It could also mean that they want to designate that cap space to cover for their Draft class, while they still have roughly $5 million in cap room now to work with and they don't have to worry about holding that cap space hostage for their Draft class or make any other restructure to clear the room at a later point.

Looks like Jalen Carter's Draft stock just took a nose dive after his Pro Day. He was 9 pounds heavier than he was at the Combine, and he wasn't able to finish positional drills. Didn't do any testing either. No 40 time, bench, nothing.
