You didn't exclude proper football, don't know of a European kickball league.
Answer is easy: Liverpool v. Manchester United
Our benchmark for popularity is usually boiled down to TV ratings. Last year’s Super Bowl drew a global audience of 112 million. Last year’s Stanley Cup final drew an average of just over 5 million. Last year’s Liverpool vs. Manchester United matches? Over 600 million.

Homer pick here, but Steelers/Ravens. They have both been competitive for the better part of the past 2 decades and each game is a slugfest, no matter which team is doing better than the other. The win margins average like 2.5 points and the series is like 33-25-0 all time in favor of Pittsburgh. You get the occasional blowout every 3 seasons or so, but that just adds fuel to the fire.

Steelers-Browns always seemed bigger when I lived there, but that was a long time ago. You probably know better than I do.

Bigger for the Browns, but the Steelers have and always will be the Browns' daddy. Big Ben was 26-2-1 against the Browns. Outcome during his tenure was pretty much set in stone whenever he played.

of the 4 major US Sports: MLB, NBE, NHL, NFL (not European kickball)
I'm thinking it is becoming Chiefs and Bengals
Too much mutual respect and not enough hate. I think it's gotta be a longtime divisional rivalry in the NFL. Maybe Dallas-Philly?
ATL-NO used to be pretty nasty, too. But the rest of the country never cared, and it's softened a lot since Katrina. But several local Atlanta sports radio hosts got fired when they made fun of a Saints great when he died. They just moved to the rival station, and one of them came back to the original station in a less desirable time slot. Not a good rivalry story - just a story about going way too far.

Maybe the most upset I've been at a sporting event as a spectator was a PIT-CLE game. Stuck in traffic on the highway, and Steelers fans were waving their Terrible Towels, beeping, and yelling, like they owned I-90. I was young and wanted to fight. 😂
(and of course Steelers fans filled up the Browns' stadium and the Browns lost)
snerb Where are we going, and why am I in a hand basket?
I was on a plane with him, late 90's/early 2000's. He drew a small crowd in my hometown airport.
But if you're going to go there, isn't the correct answer Sgt. Slaughter vs. Serpentor?
That’s a classic, but I don’t think they battled enough times for it to be a rivalry. Now if we look at Joe vs Cobra, you have a point. The laser hockey match was pretty epic.

I do remember that now. Was that part of the Weather Dominator?
I had Firefly, but I stopped buying action figures in 5th grade. I became all about sports and video games, until I started buying Spider-Man figures again in my mid-20's.
